The African Democratic Congress (ADC) governorship candidate in Abia State, Kalu Kalu, has challenged Governor Alex Otti to identify a single project executed by his administration in Ohafia Local Government Area.
Kalu, who hails from Ohafia, made the challenge during an appearance on Arise TV’s The Morning Show on Friday, as political activities intensify ahead of the 2027 governorship election.
The ADC candidate claimed that Ohafia Local Government Area had received more than N16 billion in allocations over the past three and a half years but alleged that residents had not seen any visible project executed by the state government.
He challenged the governor and his aides to identify a project undertaken by the administration in the area.
Kalu further pledged to withdraw from the 2027 governorship contest if a single project executed by the Otti administration in Ohafia could be identified.
“If your station will go to Ohafia Local Government and show one single project Alex Otti has done for the people of Ohafia Local Government, I will drop my gubernatorial ambition,” he said.
The ADC candidate also raised concerns about electricity supply in the area, alleging that Ohafia had been without electricity for close to a decade.
He said the lack of basic infrastructure had contributed to difficulties faced by residents and businesses in the local government.
Kalu’s comments come amid growing political activity in Abia State ahead of the 2027 governorship election, with Governor Otti seeking a second term under the Labour Party and opposition parties positioning their candidates.
Otti has previously defended his administration’s record, saying its infrastructure and governance interventions are being extended beyond the major urban centres to other parts of the state.
In September, the governor said his administration had prioritised the restoration and development of Aba and Umuahia before expanding interventions into other areas of Abia.
Kalu also outlined his vision for Abia if elected, particularly his plans for young people.
He said his administration would focus on creating opportunities that would encourage young residents to remain in the state instead of leaving in search of better economic prospects.
According to him, many young Nigerians have lost confidence in the country’s economic prospects and believe opportunities are more readily available outside Nigeria.
He said his administration would seek to change that perception by creating an environment where young people could build sustainable livelihoods within Abia.
The ADC candidate’s challenge places infrastructure development and the distribution of government projects among the issues likely to feature prominently in the state’s 2027 governorship campaign.
The claims concerning allocations, projects and electricity supply remain statements made by the candidate and would require independent verification from relevant government records and agencies.
