Kebbi State Governor, Nasir Idris, has joined Nigeria’s delegation to the 81st United Nations General Assembly taking place in New York, United States.
Idris is among senior Nigerian officials participating in the high-level global gathering, where Vice President Kashim Shettima is leading the country’s delegation on behalf of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
The 81st UN General Assembly’s General Debate is scheduled to run from September 22 to 28, 2026, under the theme, “Restoring trust, managing transformation: A United Nations that delivers for all.”
Shettima is expected to deliver Nigeria’s national statement, outlining the country’s priorities on issues including national development, international cooperation, peace and security, economic growth and reforms to global institutions.
The Vice President is also scheduled to participate in high-level meetings and bilateral engagements with foreign leaders, international organisations and development partners during the UNGA week.
Governor Idris, alongside Nasarawa State Governor Abdullahi Sule, said their participation would provide an opportunity to promote investment opportunities in their respective states.
The two governors highlighted the solid mineral resources available in Kebbi and Nasarawa and expressed interest in attracting international investors to support economic development.
For Kebbi, the governor’s participation provides an opportunity to showcase the state’s investment potential and engage with international stakeholders on areas of mutual economic interest.
Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Jimoh Ibrahim, has said the country’s participation in the UNGA will focus on strengthening its engagement with the international community.
He also said Nigeria would continue to push for reforms that would give developing countries a stronger voice in global decision-making.
Nigeria is also expected to renew its advocacy for a permanent seat for Africa on the United Nations Security Council during the high-level meetings.
The participation of Nigerian governors alongside federal officials reflects the broader focus on using international engagements to attract investment, deepen partnerships and promote economic opportunities across the country.
As the General Assembly progresses, the Nigerian delegation is expected to hold discussions with international partners on investment, development, climate action, global financial reforms and other issues affecting Nigeria and Africa.
