Nigeria’s entertainment industry has been thrown into mourning following the death of veteran actor, Oludotun Baiyewu Jacobs, popularly called Olu Jacobs, at the age of 84.
The actor’s passing was made public on Wednesday, September 16, 2026, by his son, Olusoji Jacobs, who shared the news on Instagram.
In his tribute, Olusoji remembered his father as a cherished family man who played the roles of husband, father, grandfather and uncle with love. He thanked God for the life his father lived and the mark he made during his years.
The family also requested that members of the public allow them to grieve privately following the loss.
Olusoji honoured his father with the title “The Lion of Lufodo,” reflecting Jacobs’ longstanding contribution to the entertainment outfit he built with his wife, actress Joke Silva.
Jacobs was widely regarded as one of the defining faces of Nigerian acting. His career covered stage performances, television and cinema, earning him recognition both within Nigeria and internationally.
His acting journey began in Britain, where he received professional training at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA). He later featured in British television programmes and international productions before eventually returning home to Nigeria.
Back in Nigeria, Jacobs became a familiar and respected face in Nollywood, taking on a wide range of roles and becoming known for his authoritative delivery and ability to bring different characters to life.
His influence extended beyond performances on screen. Jacobs and Joke Silva were instrumental in the Lufodo Group, an entertainment company involved in theatrical productions, filmmaking and the development of talents.
Over the course of his career, Jacobs received numerous honours for his contribution to the arts. Among them was the Member of the Order of the Federal Republic (MFR), a national award conferred on him in 2011.
His death brings to an end a remarkable career that connected different generations of Nigerian theatre, television and film audiences.
He leaves behind a body of work that remains an important part of Nigeria’s entertainment history.
The family has reiterated its request for privacy as it mourns the veteran actor.
