Support for the re-election bid of Senator Orji Uzor Kalu in Abia North has received a boost, with former Deputy Speaker of the Abia State House of Assembly, Ifeanyi Uchendu, and public affairs commentator Ola Kalu backing his 2027 ambition.
Uchendu and Ola Kalu separately commended the senator’s record in office, citing his legislative experience and what they described as developmental interventions across the five local government areas that make up Abia North Senatorial District.
Uchendu, who recently met with Kalu in London, said voters should assess candidates based on their records, competence, character and contributions to public service rather than political rhetoric or personal interests.
The former deputy speaker described Kalu as an experienced politician with considerable knowledge of governance, arguing that his years in public office had given him an understanding of the challenges confronting the people of Abia North and the wider country.
According to Uchendu, the 2027 election should provide an opportunity for voters to scrutinise the achievements and capacity of candidates before deciding who deserves their support.
He maintained that elections should focus on development, accountability, ideas and the future of the people, rather than political noise.
Ola Kalu also expressed support for the senator during a radio programme in Abia State, where he described Orji Kalu as an effective representative whose interventions had contributed to development in the district.
He argued that the responsibility of a legislator extends beyond lawmaking and oversight to attracting projects and opportunities capable of improving the welfare of constituents.
Among the projects he attributed to Senator Kalu were road construction and rehabilitation initiatives in communities across Abia North.
He cited a one-kilometre road project in Ndi Orieke and a two-kilometre road linking the Army checkpoint at Isiugwu Junction with Isugwu Village.
He also mentioned the rehabilitation of classroom blocks in Okagwe, Elu, Ebem and Akanu communities in Ohafia Local Government Area, alongside classroom renovation and borehole projects in Bende, Isuikwuato and Arochukwu.
Education and youth development were also highlighted, with Ola Kalu pointing to scholarship support reportedly provided to 150 students studying in tertiary institutions across Nigeria.
He further praised the senator’s empowerment initiatives and efforts to facilitate opportunities for young people within the district.
The endorsements come after Senator Kalu secured the APC ticket to seek another term in the Senate. He recorded a decisive victory at the party’s Abia North senatorial primary, polling 65,651 votes against Philip Nto, who received 2,103 votes.
Kalu, a former governor of Abia State and former Senate Chief Whip, has represented Abia North in the Senate and remains a prominent figure in the state’s APC political structure.
The latest endorsements indicate growing mobilisation around his 2027 re-election campaign as political activities intensify ahead of the general elections.
However, the final outcome will depend on the electorate and the wider political contest in Abia North as other parties and potential candidates position themselves for the election.
