Ekiti: Ex-APC Governorship Aspirant Remanded Over Defamation, Cyberbullying Allegations

A Magistrate Court sitting in Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State, has ordered the remand of a former All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship aspirant, Abimbola Olajumoke, over allegations bordering on defamation and cyberbullying.

The case was brought before the court by Yemisi Joluwe, Chief Executive Officer of YSJ Agro-Allied Limited, who accused the former aspirant of making statements allegedly capable of damaging her reputation and that of her organisation.

The development comes amid an ongoing legal dispute involving allegations made against the complainant and matters connected to the activities of the company.

According to the report, the court had previously granted Olajumoke bail. However, her bail was subsequently revoked after she failed to appear before the court for a scheduled proceeding.

Following the revocation of the bail, she was arrested and brought before the court, which ordered that she be remanded for a period of one month pending further proceedings in the case.

The complainant alleged that statements attributed to Olajumoke contained claims that were false and had negatively affected the reputation of the company and its personnel.

Joluwe is seeking legal redress over the alleged statements and has reportedly requested a retraction as well as a public apology and other remedies available under the law.

The case also involves allegations surrounding the kidnapping and subsequent death of a member of staff associated with the company. The circumstances surrounding the incident are reportedly being investigated by relevant security agencies.

The court’s decision to remand the former governorship aspirant does not amount to a determination of guilt, as the allegations remain subject to judicial proceedings.

Olajumoke, who had previously sought the APC ticket to contest the Ekiti governorship election, has been involved in the state’s political space and was among aspirants who expressed interest in securing the party’s nomination.

Her legal troubles now come as political activities continue to increase ahead of the 2027 elections, with politicians and political aspirants across the country facing increased public and legal scrutiny.

The matter has also drawn attention because of the allegations of cyberbullying and defamation, offences that have increasingly featured in legal disputes involving public figures and political actors.

Legal experts have continued to stress the importance of allowing courts to determine whether statements made by individuals amount to defamation or other offences after considering the evidence presented by all parties.

The court has adjourned the matter to a later date in September for further proceedings.

Until the case is fully determined, the allegations against Olajumoke remain allegations, and she is entitled to the presumption of innocence under the law.

The case is expected to attract further attention when it returns to court, particularly as the parties present additional arguments and evidence concerning the allegations.

The development highlights the growing legal consequences of statements made in public spaces and online platforms, particularly where such statements are alleged to have caused reputational damage.

It also underscores the need for public figures and political actors to exercise caution when making allegations against individuals or organisations, especially through digital platforms.

As proceedings continue, attention will remain focused on the evidence presented before the court and the eventual determination of the matter.
