2027: My Focus Is Vote Protection, Not Campaign Tours — Yesufu

Social activist and prominent supporter of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Aisha Yesufu, has explained why she will not travel extensively with Peter Obi ahead of the 2027 general election, as she did during the 2023 presidential campaign.

Yesufu said her focus ahead of the 2027 election would shift towards voter mobilisation, election-day organisation and ensuring that votes cast for Obi are properly recorded and protected at polling units.

She made this known in a video clip posted on her official Facebook page on Sunday.

According to Yesufu, her extensive involvement in Obi’s 2023 campaign was largely aimed at helping Nigerians understand that the former Anambra State governor was not a candidate representing any particular ethnic or religious group, but one who sought to govern all Nigerians.

She said the campaign helped broaden Obi’s appeal and changed the perception of some Nigerians who had initially doubted his chances in the 2023 presidential election.

However, Yesufu said her priority for 2027 would be to build grassroots networks, mobilise voters and ensure that votes cast at polling units are accurately recorded and protected throughout the electoral process.

She urged supporters to establish strong networks at polling units and coordinate efforts to monitor voting, counting and the collation of results.

The activist also called on voters to familiarise themselves with the process of recording election results and remain vigilant against errors or manipulation.

“Your vote that you voted, it must be entered. You must see it manually entered. Follow it. Escort your vote from your polling unit to the ward collation centre,” she said.

Yesufu explained that although she would still campaign alongside Obi when necessary, travelling with him from state to state would no longer be her primary role.

“There are so many other things that I am doing. I am going to be doing so you might not get out as much as possible to ensure that I’m doing this,” she said.

She added that several young Nigerians were already contributing to the political movement in different ways, including voter mobilisation, photography, content creation and other forms of grassroots engagement.

Yesufu said the emphasis ahead of the 2027 election should therefore extend beyond campaign rallies to building an organised network capable of mobilising voters and safeguarding the integrity of their votes from the polling unit through the collation process.
