Five people have died while 10 others were rescued following two separate building collapse incidents in Kano State.

The incidents occurred at Gaida in Kumbotso Local Government Area and Kurna in Fagge Local Government Area, according to the Kano State Fire Service.

The first collapse occurred at a construction site near Salbas Filling Station in Gaida. Emergency responders rescued two workers alive, while four other workers were recovered unconscious and later confirmed dead.

The victims were taken to Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital, where they were handed over to the police.

Shortly afterwards, another building collapse was reported at the Khadija Idris Bala Islamiyya school in Kurna, Fagge Local Government Area. The incident trapped nine students inside the building.

Firefighters rescued eight of the students alive, while another student was recovered unconscious and later pronounced dead. The rescued students were subsequently handed over to the school authorities.

The two incidents have raised fresh concerns over building safety and compliance with construction standards, particularly during the rainy season.

The Kano State Fire Service said investigations are ongoing to determine the causes of the structural failures.

The agency urged property owners, contractors and construction workers to strictly follow approved building regulations and safety standards to prevent further loss of lives.

The incidents come as authorities continue to emphasise the importance of proper construction practices and regular inspection of buildings across the state.
