President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has congratulated former military President, General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida, on his 85th birthday, describing the retired military leader as an elder statesman whose leadership significantly shaped Nigeria’s political, economic and geographical development.

In a birthday message issued by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu acknowledged Babangida’s years in military service and his leadership of Nigeria from 1985 to 1993.

The President said Babangida’s administration left enduring marks on the country, particularly through its influence on Nigeria’s political structure, economic development and geographical configuration.

Tinubu credited the former military ruler with expanding the economy, developing infrastructure and establishing institutions and agencies that, according to him, continue to contribute to national development.

He also highlighted Babangida’s role in the creation of additional states, saying the former leader’s decisions helped shape the geographical structure of contemporary Nigeria.

“Like him or not, former President Babangida impacted Nigeria in ways no other leader has,” Tinubu said, while acknowledging that the former military leader’s administration remains an important part of the country’s political history.

The President further described Babangida’s contributions as significant enough to secure him an enduring place in Nigeria’s history.

Tinubu also noted that Babangida continues to offer advice and guidance on national issues despite his retirement from active public service.

He wished the former military President good health, strength and many more years as he celebrates his 85th birthday.

Babangida, who ruled Nigeria between 1985 and 1993, remains a prominent figure in the country’s political history, with his administration continuing to attract both praise and debate over its policies and legacy.

The birthday message from Tinubu adds to tributes from political leaders and other Nigerians celebrating the former military ruler at 85.
