Aminullahi Mustapha, a former House of Representatives aspirant under the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Kebbi State, has officially defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC), citing the need to align with a political platform that he believes offers greater opportunities to contribute to the development of his constituency and the state.
Mustapha announced his decision after consultations with political associates, community leaders, supporters, and other stakeholders. He explained that the move followed careful consideration of the current political landscape and his desire to pursue a platform that reflects his vision for effective representation and grassroots development.
According to him, politics should be driven by service to the people rather than personal interests or party loyalty alone. He said his decision was motivated by the need to work within a political environment that provides the support and structure required to deliver meaningful dividends of democracy to the people of Kebbi State.
The politician expressed appreciation to members and leaders of the African Democratic Congress for the opportunity to contest under the party’s platform and for the support he received during his time in the party. He noted that his departure should not be viewed as an act of hostility but as a strategic political decision made in the interest of his supporters and constituents.
Mustapha also thanked his supporters for standing by him throughout his political journey, urging them to remain united and committed as they begin a new chapter within the APC. He expressed confidence that the party would provide a stronger platform for advancing development initiatives and addressing the needs of the people.
Leaders and members of the APC in Kebbi welcomed the former ADC aspirant into the party, describing his defection as a positive development that would strengthen the party’s grassroots support. They expressed optimism that his political experience, community engagement, and commitment to public service would contribute to the party’s objectives in the state.
Political observers say defections have become a recurring feature of Nigeria’s political landscape, particularly as politicians reposition themselves ahead of future elections. Such movements are often influenced by internal party dynamics, leadership considerations, electoral calculations, and the search for platforms that offer greater political opportunities.
Analysts believe that while party defections can reshape political alliances, voters will ultimately judge political leaders based on their integrity, performance, and ability to deliver on campaign promises. They also argue that political parties should continue strengthening their internal democratic processes to retain members and build public confidence.
Residents of Kebbi State are expected to monitor how Mustapha’s decision affects local political alignments and future electoral contests. His defection may influence supporters, party structures, and political calculations within his constituency, particularly if other political figures decide to make similar moves in the coming months.
As political activities continue across the country, stakeholders have called on political actors to prioritize peaceful engagement, issue-based campaigns, and respect for democratic principles. They stress that political competition should focus on policies and programmes capable of improving the lives of citizens rather than personal rivalries.
Mustapha reaffirmed his commitment to serving the people of Kebbi State and pledged to work with members of his new party to promote development, unity, and inclusive governance. He said his political ambition remains centred on providing effective representation and contributing to initiatives that will improve the welfare and economic opportunities of the people he seeks to serve.
