Former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi has recounted an alleged threat he received during the political battle leading up to the 2015 general elections, using the experience to encourage opposition figures to remain committed as preparations begin for the 2027 presidential poll.
Amaechi, who is now associated with the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as its vice-presidential candidate, shared the account while addressing members of the party’s presidential campaign council. He spoke about the difficulties he allegedly encountered while opposing the administration in power before the 2015 elections.
In a video published by Symfoni TV on Saturday, October 10, 2026, the former governor described the pressure and challenges that confronted him and his political associates during the campaign period. He maintained that the obstacles did not stop them from pursuing their political objectives.
Recounting one of the incidents, Amaechi alleged that he received a telephone call from the wife of the then president, who reportedly warned him about the consequences of winning the election.
He quoted her as saying, “The wife of the president called me and told me, ‘I will put you in prison if you win.’”
The former governor presented the alleged conversation as an example of the difficulties he faced during the political contest. He urged members of the campaign council not to allow threats, pressure or other challenges to discourage them from participating actively in the opposition’s activities.
Amaechi further reminded the gathering that political authority does not last forever, encouraging party members to remain determined regardless of the circumstances surrounding their campaign.
He also brought up previous allegations that he was prevented from using certain airports while serving as governor of Rivers State. According to him, such experiences formed part of the challenges he encountered during the struggle that preceded the change of government in 2015.
Turning his attention to the forthcoming 2027 presidential election, Amaechi called on ADC campaign officials to intensify efforts to expand the party’s reach and improve public understanding of its presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar.
He stressed the importance of communicating the party’s proposals effectively and engaging Nigerians on issues that directly affect their daily lives. He identified economic difficulties, escalating petrol prices, widespread poverty and the increasing cost of living among the concerns that should feature prominently in the campaign.
The former governor encouraged members of the campaign council to remain organised, maintain their commitment and work towards presenting the party’s message to a wider audience.
His remarks come as political parties and opposition groups begin positioning themselves ahead of the 2027 general elections. Amaechi’s account of his experiences during the 2015 campaign formed part of his appeal for ADC members to remain focused as they prepare for another major electoral contest.
