President Bola Tinubu has held a high-level security meeting with the Minister of Defence, General Christopher Musa (retd.), at the Presidential Residence in Lagos, with discussions centred on Nigeria’s security challenges and ongoing military activities.

The engagement provided an opportunity for the President and the Defence Minister to assess developments in the country’s fight against terrorism, insurgency, banditry and other threats affecting communities across the country.

According to a statement released on Monday by Leah Katung-Babatunde, the Special Adviser to the Defence Minister on Media, the meeting also considered ways of improving collaboration between the various security agencies responsible for maintaining law and order.

The discussions reportedly covered the broader national defence strategy, including measures aimed at consolidating gains recorded in military operations and improving the country’s ability to respond effectively to emerging security threats.

During the engagement, President Tinubu acknowledged what he described as encouraging developments in efforts to protect communities facing security challenges.

The President further reiterated his administration’s readiness to continue supporting the Ministry of Defence as it carries out its responsibilities in protecting the nation and its citizens.

Musa, during the briefing, reportedly presented an update on several defence-related programmes currently being implemented by the government.

He also informed the President about developments in military operations, the logistical requirements of personnel deployed to various frontline locations and measures being considered to improve the effectiveness of the armed forces.

Part of the proposed changes involves improving the welfare and morale of military personnel serving in difficult operational environments.

The Defence Minister also outlined plans to upgrade military hardware and improve the capabilities of the armed forces through the acquisition and modernisation of essential equipment.

According to the statement, attention would equally be given to the rehabilitation and development of military facilities and other infrastructure required to support personnel across different parts of the country.

The ministry said the proposed reforms are intended to enhance operational effectiveness while providing members of the armed forces with better support as they confront security threats.

Musa subsequently thanked President Tinubu for his continued backing and direction concerning national security matters.

The Defence Minister also reaffirmed the ministry’s determination to continue implementing its responsibilities and supporting ongoing efforts to protect Nigerians.

He assured the public that the Defence Ministry would remain focused on its constitutional duties while working with other security institutions to address threats to national peace and stability.

The Lagos meeting forms part of President Tinubu’s continuing consultations with senior government officials and security authorities on developments affecting the country.

Such engagements are aimed at reviewing existing strategies, identifying areas requiring additional intervention and ensuring that appropriate measures are taken to address security concerns confronting different parts of Nigeria.

The latest meeting comes as the Federal Government continues to place emphasis on strengthening the country’s security architecture, improving military capacity and enhancing cooperation among agencies involved in safeguarding lives and property nationwide.
