The Kano State Police Command has invited the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate for the Gwale State Constituency, Aminu Abdullahi Warkal, for questioning over an alleged display of a firearm at a political gathering.
The invitation followed the circulation of a video on social media in which Warkal was allegedly seen displaying what appeared to be a pump-action rifle during a political event.
The command’s spokesperson, CSP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, disclosed the development in a statement issued on Monday, October 5, 2026.
According to the police, the video was discovered during routine cyber patrol and intelligence-led monitoring of activities across Kano State.
The command said the alleged display, if established by investigation, could constitute a violation of the provisions of the Firearms Act.
It added that such conduct could cause fear, intimidate members of the public and undermine public peace and security.
Following the directive of the Commissioner of Police, Kano State Command, CP Ibrahim Adamu Bakori, Warkal was invited to the police headquarters in Bompai, Kano.
The police said he was at the State Intelligence Department for questioning while investigations into the matter continued.
The command stressed that the investigation would establish the circumstances surrounding the alleged firearm display and determine whether any offence had been committed.
The Commissioner of Police warned that the command would not tolerate lawlessness, political thuggery or the display of weapons capable of threatening public safety, regardless of the status of the individual involved.
The police also urged political actors, their supporters and other stakeholders to conduct their activities peacefully and comply with the Electoral Act, Firearms Act and other relevant laws.
The command called on political groups to promote tolerance and respect for the rule of law as political activities increase ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Reports from other media outlets identified the alleged incident as having occurred during a political gathering in the Janbulo area of Gwale Local Government Area. Some reports also alleged that the video showed the firearm being fired, although the police statement cited by Channels Television specifically referred to the alleged display of a suspected pump-action rifle.
The development has drawn attention to concerns over the presence or display of weapons during political activities, particularly as parties and candidates intensify mobilisation ahead of the 2027 elections.
The police have reiterated that further action will depend on the outcome of the ongoing investigation.
