The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is set to brief Nigerians on its level of readiness for the 2027 general elections as the country approaches the final 100 days before the polls.
The electoral body is expected to convene a national stakeholders’ engagement and World Press Conference on Tuesday, October 6, to provide an overview of the measures being put in place ahead of the elections.
The programme, scheduled to begin at 10am, will take place at the Bola Ahmed Tinubu International Conference Centre in Abuja. The event will be led by the INEC Chairman, Professor Joash Amupitan, SAN, with representatives of other institutions and groups involved in the electoral process also expected to participate.
According to INEC, the meeting will offer the public and major stakeholders an opportunity to receive firsthand information on preparations for the 2027 elections.
Areas expected to feature prominently during the engagement include the voters’ register, the nomination of candidates by political parties, election logistics and strategies being developed to protect the credibility of the electoral process.
The Commission disclosed the development in a statement released on Sunday, explaining that the meeting was part of efforts to keep Nigerians informed as preparations for the elections move into a crucial stage.
INEC said the forum would also provide an avenue to deepen communication with organisations and institutions whose responsibilities are directly connected to the successful conduct and security of the elections.
The electoral commission further stressed that the stakeholders’ meeting reflects its determination to promote openness, timely communication and cooperation among key participants in the electoral environment.
Political party representatives and leaders are expected at the gathering alongside security agencies serving under the Inter-Agency Consultative Committee on Election Security.
Other participants listed for the event include members of the diplomatic community, development organisations, civil society groups and accredited election observation bodies.
The engagement comes at a time when preparations for the 2027 elections are entering a decisive period. INEC is expected to complete several administrative, operational, technological and logistical processes before Nigerians head to the polls.
Although the Commission did not disclose whether the meeting would result in any adjustment to the already announced electoral timetable, its chairman is expected to speak on the progress made so far and the tasks that remain before the elections.
To ensure that Nigerians across the country can follow the proceedings, INEC announced that the event would be transmitted live through major television stations. The Commission will also make the proceedings available through its verified social media channels.
INEC stated that physical participation at the venue would be restricted to invited persons. Journalists granted accreditation and other invited participants will be expected to provide their invitation cards or valid accreditation tags before being allowed through the security checkpoints.
The meeting is expected to give political actors, civil society organisations, security institutions, development partners and members of the public a clearer picture of INEC’s preparations as the 2027 general elections draw closer.
