Atiku Hosts Aisha Buhari in Abuja

Former Vice President and African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential flagbearer, Atiku Abubakar, on Wednesday welcomed former First Lady Aisha Buhari to his Abuja home, sparking interest amid increasing political activities ahead of the 2027 elections.

Atiku confirmed the visit in a post shared on his X account, describing his interaction with the widow of former President Muhammadu Buhari as a cordial and meaningful engagement.

The ADC candidate, however, did not disclose what prompted Aisha Buhari’s visit or whether the two discussed political matters during the encounter.

Instead, Atiku used his remarks to draw attention to the economic hardship experienced by households across the country. He stressed the importance of placing the well-being, dignity and future of Nigerians at the centre of governance.

“Today, I was delighted to receive former First Lady, H.E. Aisha Buhari,” Atiku stated.

He noted that the growing prices of food, transportation, schooling, medical services and other necessities had continued to put pressure on families.

The former Vice President argued that Nigerians should have access to an economic system where their efforts can translate into better living conditions, employment opportunities and improved prospects for their families.

He said the country must work towards creating an environment where citizens can regain confidence and live with dignity.

“That is the Nigeria we must build together, a country that works for its people again,” Atiku said.

He further called for measures capable of reducing the financial difficulties confronting citizens, restoring optimism and making everyday life more affordable.

The meeting occurred at a time when political consultations are intensifying across the country ahead of the 2027 presidential contest. Atiku recently secured the ADC presidential ticket, while opposition politicians have continued talks over possible cooperation and broader political arrangements.

Earlier in the month, the ADC addressed questions surrounding Atiku’s non-attendance at an opposition gathering in Abuja. The party explained that the meeting was largely convened for political parties to deliberate on issues affecting their collective interests rather than for individual presidential aspirants.

Atiku and Aisha Buhari have also crossed paths in recent months. In February 2026, the former Vice President received Aisha, her daughter Hanan and other members of the Buhari family in Saudi Arabia while they were there to perform Umrah.

Aisha Buhari’s latest meeting with Atiku also comes as attention remains focused on the political activities of the Buhari family.

In May, Yusuf Buhari emerged victorious in the APC primary conducted for the Sandamu/Daura/Mai’adua Federal Constituency in Katsina State. He secured 6,386 votes, defeating Auwal Daura, who obtained 322 votes.

The result drew attention because of the Buhari family’s longstanding political significance within the Daura axis of Katsina State.

Since the death of Muhammadu Buhari in London on July 13, 2025, Aisha has continued to participate in activities aimed at preserving and promoting aspects of his public legacy.

In July, she spoke about her late husband’s contributions to education and human capital development at the groundbreaking ceremony for a Computer Science Complex at Al-Qalam University in Katsina.

The construction of the facility is being funded from proceeds generated by the book From Soldier to Statesman: The Legacy of Muhammadu Buhari, which chronicles the former president’s life, military career and years in public service.

Aisha said the initiative was designed to honour Buhari by supporting education, technology and human development rather than concentrating solely on physical memorials.

Neither Atiku nor Aisha publicly confirmed that political issues featured in their latest discussion. Nevertheless, the meeting has attracted attention because of its timing, coming as political actors continue to reposition themselves and explore new relationships ahead of the 2027 general elections.
