PRP Sets Fresh Conditions for 2027 Opposition Coalition

The Peoples Redemption Party (PRP) has set new conditions for its participation in the emerging opposition coalition ahead of the 2027 general elections.

PRP National Chairman, Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, said the party would not sacrifice its ideology, identity and core values simply to work with other opposition parties.

He said the coalition must have a clear purpose beyond removing the All Progressives Congress (APC) from power and should present Nigerians with practical solutions to insecurity, poverty and other challenges facing the country.

Baba-Ahmed warned that the PRP would withdraw from the coalition if it adopted policies, principles or strategies that contradicted the party’s core values.

According to him, about six or seven opposition parties are currently involved in the discussions, while other parties could still join the arrangement.

He described the emerging alliance as a “coalition of the willing and the able,” stressing that the PRP was approaching the talks with caution and based on trust.

The PRP chairman also said the party was prepared to consider dropping its own presidential candidate if the coalition produced an arrangement that justified such a decision.

The party’s presidential candidate, former Cross River State Governor Donald Duke, has similarly indicated that he could step aside if a suitable consensus candidate emerges from the coalition.

Opposition parties have continued discussions on forming a common platform ahead of the 2027 election, although disagreements over leadership, ambitions and the choice of a possible consensus candidate.
