Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, and governors of the All Progressives Congress have disagreed over the emerging Rainbow Coalition ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The disagreement followed Wike’s efforts to mobilise a coalition of politicians in Rivers State to support President Bola Tinubu’s re-election while allowing opposition parties to contest other elective positions.
Chairman of the Progressive Governors’ Forum and Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodimma, said APC governors would not support any political arrangement capable of weakening the party or undermining Tinubu’s re-election.
Uzodimma stated that the governors’ campaign commitment remained exclusively to APC candidates at all levels of the 2027 elections.
However, Wike defended the Rainbow Coalition, saying the platform was created to mobilise support for Tinubu across political parties and was not affiliated with the APC.
The FCT minister maintained that supporting Tinubu for a second term did not mean he had abandoned the Peoples Democratic Party or that he would support APC candidates in every state.
Wike argued that politicians could support a presidential candidate while backing candidates from other parties in governorship and legislative elections.
He also dismissed concerns raised by the APC governors, describing them as politically unnecessary and insisting that political support for Tinubu should not be used to restrict his activities within the PDP.
The disagreement comes amid increasing political realignments ahead of the 2027 elections, with various political actors also positioning themselves for influence beyond the 2027 polls.
