Governors elected under the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) have rejected any political partnership or arrangement with individuals or opposition groups ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The governors reiterated their allegiance to the ruling party, stating that their political activities would remain focused on advancing the interests of the APC and its officially nominated candidates.
Chairman of the APC Governors Forum and Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodimma, disclosed this after the governors held a meeting in Abuja on Monday night.
Uzodimma explained that the forum had not entered into any agreement with individuals or opposition parties ahead of the forthcoming polls. According to him, the governors remain committed to the party’s leadership and established political structure.
The declaration comes against the backdrop of political activities surrounding the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory and senior Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) figure, Nyesom Wike.
Wike has been promoting what is known as the Rainbow Coalition in Rivers State, an initiative aimed at mobilising political support for President Bola Tinubu ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
However, the political movement has reportedly generated tension between Wike and some APC governors.
During a recent media interaction, Wike alleged that Uzodimma and Kwara State Governor, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, were among those working against his political interests.
The former Rivers governor attributed the opposition to the increasing reach of his Rainbow Coalition, which he claimed was creating opportunities for politicians seeking alternative platforms ahead of the 2027 elections.
Wike maintained that the coalition could provide political opportunities for individuals interested in challenging APC candidates in governorship and senatorial contests across different states.
Against this background, the APC governors declared that they would not back any political arrangement capable of creating conflicting loyalties or weakening the party’s chances at the polls.
Reading the communiqué issued after the meeting, Uzodimma said the governors had unanimously agreed not to participate in or endorse any alliance that could undermine President Tinubu’s re-election bid, weaken the APC or negatively affect any candidate sponsored by the party.
He stressed that APC governors would not support candidates contesting elections on platforms other than that of the ruling party.
According to him, the party had already selected candidates to represent its interests at the various levels of the 2027 elections, making it necessary for the governors to work towards their success.
Uzodimma further stated that the campaign activities of the governors would be devoted entirely to APC candidates.
He said the party’s campaign structure across the states would operate in accordance with President Tinubu’s political expectations and the broader objectives of the APC.
The declaration underscores the governors’ determination to maintain party unity and prevent external political arrangements from affecting the APC’s electoral strategy.
It also comes as political activities ahead of the 2027 elections continue to intensify, with various political actors and groups positioning themselves for the contests.
By distancing themselves from alliances outside the APC, the governors have made clear that their electoral support will remain centred on candidates officially recognised and sponsored by the ruling party.
