Zulum Reveals Tinubu’s Succession Deal

Borno State Governor, Babagana Zulum, has revealed that a political understanding exists for the presidency to shift to Northern Nigeria once President Bola Tinubu concludes his second term.

The governor spoke in Kaduna on Sunday following his participation in a meeting involving Northern women Ulama and Islamic scholars.

Zulum explained that the arrangement formed part of the agreement reached by political stakeholders ahead of the 2023 presidential election, which eventually resulted in Tinubu emerging as Nigeria’s president.

He stated that northern leaders had agreed to support a southern candidate for the present presidential tenure, with the expectation that political power would subsequently move back to the North.

The governor’s remarks echo earlier statements from prominent northern politicians regarding the region’s expectations for the 2031 presidential election.

Former All Progressives Congress National Chairman, Abdullahi Ganduje, had earlier maintained that the presidency would rotate back to the North after Tinubu completes two terms in office.

Niger State Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago also urged northern politicians in 2025 to wait until 2031 before making fresh demands for the presidency.

Zulum, however, described the arrangement as part of a wider political understanding between leaders from both northern and southern Nigeria.

He said the agreement was intended to promote political balance, encourage stability and strengthen the country’s unity.

According to the Borno governor, northern politicians contributed significantly to Tinubu’s emergence during the 2023 election and should honour the understanding reached at that time.

He urged political leaders to avoid actions that could heighten tensions or deepen divisions as the country approaches the 2027 general elections.

Zulum appealed to Nigerians to remain committed to national unity despite political differences, stressing that regional disagreements should not be allowed to threaten the country’s stability.

The governor also asked citizens to exercise patience with the Tinubu administration as it tackles some of the country’s most pressing challenges.

He identified insecurity, economic hardship, poverty and the rising population of children outside the formal education system as major concerns requiring urgent attention in the North.

Zulum disclosed that northern stakeholders had held consultations on these issues, insisting that the region’s challenges extend beyond political representation.

He further highlighted the importance of women in promoting peace and stability within families and communities.

According to him, women have a strong influence on how children are raised and how peaceful relationships are maintained within society.

He encouraged the women who participated in the Kaduna gathering to return to their various communities with messages promoting peace, unity and responsible citizenship.

The governor also urged Nigerians to remain hopeful despite the difficulties confronting the country, stressing the importance of patience and perseverance during challenging periods.

Zulum maintained that his position on the presidential arrangement was not influenced by intimidation or political pressure.

He said his comments were based on his personal conviction and belief in the need to honour previous political understandings.

The governor also stressed the importance of women in Nigeria’s electoral process, particularly in Borno State.

He estimated that women account for approximately 60 to 65 per cent of votes in the state, describing them as an important force in determining electoral outcomes.

Zulum urged women to use their voting strength responsibly by supporting peaceful elections and discouraging activities capable of causing violence.

He ultimately called for greater cooperation among Nigeria’s regions, saying political competition should promote development and democracy rather than create further divisions.
