Paul Pogba could be on his way out of Monaco, with the French club reportedly discussing an agreement to end his contract ahead of schedule.
The former Manchester United midfielder joined Monaco last summer on a two-year contract after completing an 18-month suspension for a doping offence.
His debut campaign was largely affected by injury, preventing him from making a significant impact. There were expectations that the 2018 World Cup winner would enjoy a bigger role this season.
However, the arrival of Filipe Luis as Monaco’s new head coach appears to have prompted a rethink of the team’s midfield options.
Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano reported on Wednesday that Monaco have approached Pogba’s representatives about terminating his contract by mutual consent before September 1. The move would allow the 33-year-old to search for another club during the current transfer window. Pogba, who is currently injured, will have the final say.
Pogba originally received a four-year suspension after testing positive for DHEA, a prohibited substance, following a doping test in August 2023. He maintained that the result was unintentional, explaining that he had unknowingly consumed a supplement containing the banned substance.
His appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport was successful, with the punishment reduced to 18 months. That decision paved the way for his return to competitive football in March 2025.
Should both parties reach an agreement, Pogba’s spell in Monaco will end after just one season, leaving the French midfielder facing another major decision over the direction of his career.
