Manchester City Re-Sign Argentina Goalkeeper Geronimo Rulli

Manchester City have brought Geronimo Rulli back to the club after reaching an agreement with Marseille for the Argentine goalkeeper.

The 34-year-old has put pen to paper on a two-year contract and will operate as Gianluigi Donnarumma’s deputy at the Etihad Stadium.

Rulli is no stranger to City, having previously spent the 2016/17 season with the Premier League champions. His earlier spell, however, ended without a competitive first-team appearance.

The veteran shot-stopper said the opportunity to return to Manchester was too good to ignore, adding that the club’s reputation and demanding standards played a major role in his decision.

Rulli joins City with considerable international experience. He has represented Argentina eight times and was included in the squads that conquered the 2022 World Cup and 2024 Copa America.

He was also involved in Argentina’s campaign at last month’s World Cup, where the South Americans finished runners-up after losing the final to Spain.

His club career has taken him across several European leagues, with previous stops at Real Sociedad, Villarreal, Montpellier and Ajax.

Rulli was part of Villarreal’s famous Europa League triumph against Manchester United in 2021. He converted his own spot-kick before producing the decisive save against David de Gea as Villarreal prevailed 11-10 in the penalty contest.

His move away from Marseille comes at a time when the French outfit are under financial pressure. The club were hit with a €10 million UEFA fine for failing to satisfy financial break-even requirements and missed out on Champions League qualification after ending the 2025/26 Ligue 1 campaign in fifth position.

Marseille have already begun reducing their wage bill, with defender Facundo Medina moving to Bayer Leverkusen after just one year at the club.

Other notable departures include Mason Greenwood, who switched to Fenerbahce, and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, who left for Deportivo La Coruña in Spain.
