Mikel Arteta expects Bruno Guimaraes to play an important role in Arsenal’s push for further improvement following the midfielder’s £75m switch from Newcastle United.
The Brazilian was introduced to the Emirates crowd before Arsenal’s pre-season meeting with Borussia Dortmund on Saturday, although he watched from the sidelines as the Gunners suffered a 3-2 defeat.
Guimaraes could get his first opportunity to play for his new club when Arsenal take on Como on Wednesday.
Arteta has been impressed by the 28-year-old’s approach since his arrival, particularly the enthusiasm and determination he has shown in training.
“He has brought a lot of energy from the moment he arrived,” Arteta said, as reported by BBC Sport. “He wants to make an impact here and help build something special at the club.
“That is exactly the mentality we require.
“We want to move forward, and we believe players who have that character, ambition and determination can raise the standards across the team.”
The Arsenal manager believes Guimaraes’ ability to perform different midfield duties will give him another valuable tactical option.
According to Arteta, the former Newcastle star can adapt to two positions depending on the team’s requirements and the opposition.
He also pointed to the midfielder’s ability to regain possession, drive Arsenal forward and operate effectively in advanced areas.
Guimaraes can also provide an attacking threat, with Arteta noting his ability to make well-timed runs into the penalty area and turn those opportunities into goals.
His signing adds another dimension to an already well-stocked Arsenal midfield, which includes Declan Rice, Martin Odegaard, Martin Zubimendi, Myles Lewis-Skelly, Ethan Nwaneri, Eberechi Eze and Mikel Merino.
Arsenal have made several additions during the window, including Christos Tzolis from Club Brugge and goalkeeper Illan Meslier, who arrived as a free agent.
The Gunners also explored a deal for Real Madrid attacker Vinicius Jr, but the Brazil forward chose to remain with the Spanish giants after agreeing to a new six-year deal.
Arteta has not ruled out more business before the window shuts, saying Arsenal will continue to consider opportunities that can improve the squad.
“If the right player becomes available and can make us stronger, we will look at it,” he said.
The Spaniard also gave an update on Arsenal’s injured players. Jurrien Timber is still expected to spend several more weeks on the sidelines, while William Saliba continues his rehabilitation from a back problem.
