Barcelona has reacted to the passing of Jorge Messi, the father of former club superstar Lionel Messi, who reportedly died at 68.
The Catalan outfit conveyed its sympathy to Lionel and the entire Messi family, with the club’s leadership expressing sadness over the loss.
In a message released on Saturday, Barcelona remembered Jorge for the confidence he placed in the club when his son was beginning to make his mark in football.
The club noted that Jorge played an important part in the decision that saw a young Lionel embark on his football journey in Barcelona, where he would eventually establish himself as one of the most decorated players in the club’s history.
Beyond being Lionel’s father, Jorge was also a long-standing representative who remained involved in managing important aspects of his son’s career.
Barcelona said it appreciated the trust Jorge showed during the early stages of Lionel’s development and recognised the significance of those years to the club’s history.
The Spanish side ended its message by offering its final farewell to Jorge and extending its thoughts to those closest to him.
News of Jorge’s death was reported by Argentine media outlet Infobae and subsequently cited by MARCA. He was 68.
