Barcelona End Pursuit of Osimhen Over Salary Demands

Barcelona have reportedly withdrawn from the race to sign Nigerian striker Victor Osimhen after deciding that the cost of completing the deal is beyond what the club is prepared to commit this summer.

The Catalan side had been exploring options for a new centre-forward following Robert Lewandowski’s departure to Major League Soccer outfit Chicago Fire after the 2025/26 campaign. Osimhen’s impressive performances for Galatasaray placed him among the players considered.

Despite his goalscoring reputation, Barcelona are said to have ended their interest because of the financial demands involved. The Super Eagles star is reportedly on a lucrative contract worth about €15m in net annual salary, with additional earnings from bonuses and image rights. Reports suggest he is not willing to accept a pay cut.

With the club still operating under financial constraints, Barcelona are reluctant to stretch their wage bill or upset their salary structure for a single signing.

The transfer fee has also been viewed as another major hurdle. Galatasaray are believed to want around €75m for the 27-year-old, a figure Barcelona consider too high given their current spending plans.

Aside from the financial issues, reports claim the Spanish club also weighed concerns about Osimhen’s personality before reaching a final decision, believing there could be risks to the balance within the squad.

The Nigerian forward has consistently delivered in front of goal throughout his career. He scored 76 goals in 133 matches during his time at Napoli before maintaining that form in Turkey, where he has found the net 59 times in 74 appearances for Galatasaray.

Meanwhile, Tottenham Hotspur remain in the picture. The North London club reportedly saw an opening offer of around €60m rejected by Galatasaray but are expected to return with an improved proposal as they continue their search for a top-class striker.

Although Barcelona admire Osimhen’s quality and finishing ability, the overall financial package required to bring him to Spain has convinced the club to look elsewhere.
