Galatasaray are reportedly ready to hand Victor Osimhen the famous No. 9 jersey in a bid to convince the Nigerian striker to continue his career in Istanbul despite growing interest from several European heavyweights ahead of the 2026/27 season.
Since joining the Turkish giants from Napoli, Osimhen has worn the No. 45 shirt, while the No. 9 jersey has remained with Argentine striker Mauro Icardi.
However, with Icardi expected to leave the club when his contract expires at the end of June, Galatasaray plan to pass the iconic shirt to the Super Eagles star as a clear indication of his importance to the team.
Osimhen, 27, has attracted attention from a number of top clubs across Europe. Manchester United, now managed by Michael Carrick, are said to view the Nigerian as a key target as they seek an experienced striker for their return to the UEFA Champions League. Arsenal, Chelsea, Real Madrid, Barcelona and Atletico Madrid have also been linked with the forward.
Galatasaray completed Osimhen’s permanent signing from Napoli last year in a Turkish record deal worth €75 million and are believed to value him between €130 million and €150 million. The club have already turned down approaches from several elite European sides.
Offering the No. 9 shirt forms part of Galatasaray’s wider strategy to keep Osimhen. Another option being considered is giving him the captaincy following Icardi’s exit, with club officials reportedly viewing the Nigerian as one of the most influential figures in the squad.
Turkish football analyst Ali Naci Kucuk previously revealed that Galatasaray believe a leadership role could appeal to Osimhen, especially since similar opportunities may not be immediately available at clubs such as Manchester United, Arsenal or Chelsea, where established captains and senior players already hold significant influence.
