Nigerian Clubs Earn Millions from CAF Prize

Four Nigerian football teams—Rivers United, Remo Stars, Kwara United, and Abia Warriors—are set to receive a significant financial boost from the Confederation of African Football (CAF) after a rise in prize money for this year’s continental tournaments.

CAF recently increased the reward for the Champions League winners by $2 million, raising it to $6 million, while the Confederation Cup champions now take home $4 million, double the previous amount. Even clubs knocked out early in the competitions will benefit more, with preliminary-round payments rising from $50,000 to $100,000. At the current exchange rate of N1,398 to the dollar, this means each of the Nigerian teams will collect about N559 million, regardless of their performance in the tournaments.

Remo Stars, despite being crowned NPFL champions, were eliminated by Mamelodi Sundowns, while Kwara United and Abia Warriors exited early from the CAF Confederation Cup. Rivers United made it to the Champions League group stage, putting them in line for an even larger payout—potentially over N1.5 billion.

Although their continental campaign was tough, Rivers United are eyeing a comeback next season. They currently lead the NPFL with two games in hand, keeping their hopes alive for another chance at African competition.
