Finidi George has expressed confidence that Rivers United remain strong contenders for the Nigeria Premier Football League title despite suffering a recent defeat.
Rivers United fell to a narrow 1–0 loss against Bayelsa United in Yenagoa, a result that affected their push for the top spot on the league table. The setback also enabled Rangers International to move ahead in the standings.
Even with the defeat, the Port Harcourt side still sits close to the summit with a solid points tally and a number of matches yet to be played compared with some of their closest rivals. Those outstanding fixtures could still play a crucial role in determining how the title race unfolds.
The encounter also confirmed Bayelsa United’s dominance in meetings between both sides this season, as they managed to record victories over Rivers United in their clashes.
However, Finidi insisted the result would not weaken his team’s determination. The former Nigeria national football team winger said his players remain focused on maintaining strong performances in the remaining matches of the campaign.
He also reflected on the club’s disappointing outing in the CAF Champions League, where the team struggled to make a major impact during the group phase.
According to the coach, winning the domestic league would give the club the opportunity to strengthen the squad and prepare more effectively for continental football in the future.
