Another setback has struck highly rated young striker Assane Diao, as the 20-year-old has been ruled out of the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations through injury. The forward, considered one of Africa’s most promising prospects, will miss the tournament after suffering a hamstring problem.
Diao’s fitness had been a major concern throughout the week after he sustained the injury while playing for Serie A club Como in their clash with AS Roma on Monday. Following medical assessments, his withdrawal was officially confirmed by the Senegalese Football Federation over the weekend.
According to the federation, examinations conducted by the national team’s medical staff revealed a hamstring injury in the right leg, making him unavailable for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations. The statement also wished the player a speedy recovery and a quick return to competitive football.
Since opting to represent Senegal at international level, the former Spain under-21 forward has faced repeated misfortune, with injuries disrupting what was expected to be a smooth transition into the senior squad.
He has earned just two senior caps so far, both coming during the World Cup qualifiers in March. The Africa Cup of Nations was expected to be a key moment for Diao to firmly establish himself in the national setup.
The team have already been hit by the injury-enforced absence of defender Ilay Camara, and no replacement has been announced for Diao. Their Group D campaign will begin against Botswana in Tangier on Tuesday.
