The surge in table tennis enthusiasm among African youths continues to accelerate, as this year’s African Youth Games in Angola welcomes an unprecedented number of participants.
Scheduled for December 10–20, 2025, the event will unfold across Luanda and several other Angolan cities, showcasing 33 sporting disciplines spread across six host locations.
So far, over 30 African nations have registered for the continental youth festival — the highest turnout since the competition began. From 14 countries at the debut edition in Morocco in 2010, to 24 in Botswana in 2014, and 25 in Algeria in 2018, the Angolan edition has set a new benchmark, with many countries appearing for the first time.
ITTF Africa President, Wahid Oshodi, described the development as a major step forward for the sport, saying:
“The turnout of teams for the 2025 AYG in Angola reflects the growth of table tennis among young people in Africa. This number even surpasses the list of competing nations at the last African Games in Ghana. With more support and encouragement for Member Associations, we can expect even greater participation at the next African Games in Egypt,” he said.
Countries confirmed for the 2025 Games include:
Guinea, Seychelles, Botswana, Namibia, Ethiopia, Benin Republic, Rwanda, Liberia, Zimbabwe, Djibouti, South Africa, Cameroon, Madagascar, Malawi, Chad, Algeria, Zambia, Kenya, Tanzania, Ghana, Ivory Coast, Egypt, Uganda, Mauritius, Senegal, Lesotho, Nigeria, Burundi, and host Angola
The African Youth Games serves as a key multisport gathering for athletes aged 14 to 17. This edition is particularly significant, as Angola becomes the first Lusophone nation to stage the event. It also aligns with Angola’s 50th independence anniversary, adding even more symbolic value to this year’s celebration.
