History was made in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, as Nigeria’s Alade Ajibade broke new ground for Africa at the 2025 World Sambo Championships. The visually impaired athlete stunned the crowd by earning a bronze medal in the men’s 98kg category — his first international appearance — and in doing so, became the first African ever to reach the podium in blind Sambo.

Ajibade’s remarkable performance stood out among Nigeria’s three-man team, drawing national and continental pride. Sheriff Hammed, Vice President of the Sambo Associations of Nigeria, hailed the feat as a defining moment for adaptive sports in Africa.

“This achievement is truly historic and deeply inspiring,” Hammed said.

“It reflects not only the resilience and talent of our athletes but also the growing recognition of Africa’s potential in adaptive sports like Sambo. Winning this medal is a testament to our commitment to inclusion, excellence and development at all levels.”

Beyond Ajibade’s bronze medal, the championship also brought another milestone for Nigeria — the country was officially admitted as a full member of the International Sambo Federation (FIAS) during its 37th Elective Congress.

Hammed expressed optimism that the new membership would open new doors for the sport’s growth across Nigeria, especially in terms of exposure and capacity building.

“Nigeria’s membership in FIAS marks a significant milestone for the growth and recognition of Sambo in our country. It means official inclusion in the global Sambo community, opening doors to international competitions, technical support and capacity building for coaches and referees,” he said.

“Our athletes can now compete under the national flag with greater visibility and opportunity. Ultimately, it’s a major step towards institutionalising Sambo in Nigeria and positioning the country as a leading force for the sport in Africa.”

In his address to delegates, FIAS President Vasily Shestakov commended the federation’s progress, highlighting key achievements such as the debut of Combat Sambo at The World Games 2025 in Chengdu, recognition by the International Paralympic Committee, and the sport’s inclusion in the International Military Sports Council calendar.
