The Federal Housing Authority (FHA) has officially commenced construction of the Renewed Hope Housing Estate in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, marking a major milestone in the Federal Government’s effort to provide affordable housing for Nigerians. The groundbreaking event was attended by Akwa Ibom State Governor, Umo Eno, alongside FHA Managing Director and Chief Executive, Oyetunde Ojo.

Ojo, speaking through a statement issued by the FHA’s Public Relations Officer, Kenneth Chigelu, lauded Governor Eno for his dedication to improving citizens’ welfare, particularly through housing provision. He recalled that during a May 2, 2024 meeting, the governor warmly received the FHA leadership and donated land free of charge for the project, promising further support to ensure its successful execution.

“This partnership reflects Governor Eno’s commitment to enhancing the lives of his people, and motivated FHA to select Akwa Ibom as the site to launch the Renewed Hope Housing programme,” Ojo said. He emphasized that the initiative fulfills President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s promise to provide affordable and livable homes, noting that quality housing contributes to productivity and an improved quality of life.

Ojo added that procurement for housing projects across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones has been completed, with groundwork scheduled in Kaduna, Abia, Ogun, Ekiti, Kogi, and Adamawa states. He highlighted the FHA’s ongoing efforts to complete inherited projects, in line with President Tinubu’s directive to eliminate abandoned government initiatives.

He described the Uyo estate as more than just housing it is a livable community aimed at creating employment and boosting economic activity in the region. Ojo expressed gratitude to Governor Eno for providing FHA the platform to establish its presence in Akwa Ibom for the first time in over 50 years.

Governor Eno, in his remarks, expressed appreciation to President Tinubu for approving the Renewed Hope Housing Scheme and to the FHA for choosing Akwa Ibom as its inaugural site. He noted that the project aligns with his administration’s goal of collaborating with the Federal Government to address the housing deficit. The governor revealed that 50 hectares had also been allocated to the Federal Ministry of Housing and Urban Development for its housing initiatives.

He reiterated his government’s commitment to citizens’ welfare, especially civil servants, referencing ongoing housing developments like Aviation City, Judicial City, and Legislative and Executive estates. Eno assured that the FHA project would be completed promptly and confirmed that state security structures would safeguard the construction site.

The Renewed Hope Housing Scheme is a flagship programme of the Tinubu administration, designed to tackle Nigeria’s housing shortage and encourage inclusive home ownership. Implemented by the FHA in partnership with state governments, the programme aims to deliver affordable, high-quality homes for low- and middle-income earners nationwide. By leveraging state-provided land and infrastructure, the initiative also seeks to stimulate employment, strengthen local construction industries, and advance the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals for sustainable cities.

Through the Renewed Hope Housing Project, the Federal Government intends to ensure all Nigerians have access to decent, affordable homes while fostering economic growth and improving living standards across the country.
