Chaos erupted in the Nigerian capital on Monday as security operatives fired tear gas and gunshots into the air to disperse protesters demanding the release of Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).
The demonstrators had gathered peacefully near the Transcorp Hilton Hotel in Abuja, chanting and waving placards bearing the hashtag #FreeNnamdiKanu. However, shortly after the protest began, police and military personnel arrived in large numbers and began dispersing the crowd using force.
Multiple tear gas canisters were launched into the area, sending protesters fleeing in different directions. The air quickly became filled with smoke, forcing many to abandon the demonstration. Gunshots were also fired into the air as part of the police crackdown.
Among those present was activist and former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore, who was seen fleeing the scene along with other demonstrators. As of press time, it was unclear whether any protesters were injured during the incident. Authorities have not confirmed any arrests.
The protest comes amid renewed calls for Kanu’s unconditional release. Human rights groups, political activists, and community leaders have intensified pressure on President Bola Tinubu’s administration to expedite Kanu’s trial or set him free.
Kanu has been in detention since June 2021 after being extradited to Nigeria under controversial circumstances. He faces terrorism-related charges, which he and his supporters have consistently denied, insisting his advocacy for Biafran self-determination is legitimate and peaceful.
Despite multiple court orders granting him bail, the federal government has continued to hold Kanu in custody, citing national security concerns.
The Monday protest underscores the rising tension surrounding the case, as public pressure mounts on the government to uphold due process and address the political dimensions of Kanu’s prolonged detention.
