Turkish top-flight club Beşiktaş FC have handed Wilfred Ndidi, the Super Eagles’ interim captain, a new position as assistant team leader, according to a statement issued by the club’s management on Friday.
The Nigerian midfielder will support Orkun Kökçü, who has been selected as the main captain of the squad. Their appointments signal a change in hierarchy following the tenure of Necip Uysal and Mert Günok, who previously served in those capacities.
“With the decision of our President Serdal Island and the Board of Directors, changes have been made regarding the captaincy of our Football A Team. Based on the recommendation of our technical team and the effectiveness of players on the field, Orkun Kökçü has been appointed as first captain and Wilfred Ndidi as second captain,” the club noted.
The statement also acknowledged the former leaders for their dedication and influence, while expressing optimism toward Kökçü and Ndidi as they begin a new phase of team leadership.
The duo are expected to take charge for the first time when Beşiktaş, currently sixth on the Turkish Super Lig standings with 13 points from seven outings, face Gençlerbirliği S.K., who occupy 14th place, on Saturday, October 18, in Week 8 of the campaign.
