ARISE News Channel has expressed profound grief over the tragic death of one of its young journalists, Somtochukwu Christelle Maduagwu, who lost her life in the early hours of Monday, September 29, 2025, during a violent armed robbery at her residence in Katampe, Abuja.

In a statement released via its official X handle, the station described the 29-year-old broadcaster, fondly known as Sommie, as a respected news anchor, reporter, and producer who had become a trusted and familiar face to viewers across Nigeria.

“It is with heavy hearts that the management and staff of ARISE News Channel announce the passing of our beloved colleague, News Anchor, Reporter, and Producer, Somtochukwu Christelle Maduagwu. Sommie tragically passed away in the early hours of Monday, September 29, 2025, following an armed robbery incident at her Katampe residence in Abuja, which is currently under police investigation.

“Sommie, 29, was not only a cherished member of the ARISE News family but also a vibrant voice that connected deeply with our audience. Beyond the airwaves, she was a qualified lawyer, a consummate professional, and a supportive colleague and friend to many.”

Tributes have since poured in from across the media industry, civil society, the legal profession, and members of the public who admired her work. Many have also called for justice and urged swift action from the authorities.

The statement concluded:

“We extend our deepest condolences to Sommie’s parents, siblings, extended family, friends, and loved ones during this heartbreaking time. Though her voice is now silent, her spirit, passion, and legacy will live on in our collective memory. We remain in shock and call for a speedy investigation, as well as the apprehension and prosecution of those responsible.”
