Rema Accused of Using Police to Harass Contractor, FCID Gives Counterclaim

The social media space was thrown into a frenzy during the week after a tech entrepreneur, identified simply as Derrick, accused popular singer Divine Ikubor, better known as Rema, of using the Nigeria Police Force to harass and detain a contractor, Amaka Obasi.

In a post on X dated September 16, 2025, Derrick alleged that Obasi, who had worked on a project for the singer, was lured into a meeting with officers of the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID), Alagbon, where she was subsequently arrested. He claimed that she was pressured to pay over ₦1 million as bail.

According to Derrick, this was not the first time Rema allegedly used the police against Obasi. He stated that she had been harassed on at least three different occasions, with Rema’s mother also filing a petition against her, claiming that the work delivered in 2023 was substandard, despite a new contract being awarded in 2024. Videos of Obasi’s arrest were also posted online.

However, the police presented a different account. Posting via its official X handle, the FCID explained that a written petition was filed against Obasi over an April 2023 agreement between her company, Ardeb Lifestyle, and the petitioner for a project valued at ₦386 million. According to the police, ₦287 million had been paid upfront, but inspection revealed the project was incomplete, with the furniture allegedly delivered missing from the site.

The FCID further claimed that investigations showed part of the payment was transferred to another account, while Obasi failed to produce an independent valuer’s report or a legal representative when advised to do so, leading to her eventual arrest.

Efforts by Saturday Beats to reach Derrick for clarification proved abortive, as his inbox was inaccessible. Calls placed to Rema’s manager, Seun Okeke, also went unanswered.

Meanwhile, Obasi’s X account has been inactive since August 30, 2025. On that day, she made two concerning posts: one simply read “sigh,” while the other stated, “I need a lawyer urgently. Anyone on the island who’s available and can make it in ~30 minutes, please?”
