Nigerian music star Tiwa Savage has shared her discomfort with being referred to as the “Queen of Afrobeats”, a title often associated with her by fans and the media.
Speaking in a recent interview with Apple Music’s Ebro, the ‘All Over’ hitmaker expressed gratitude for the recognition but made it clear she doesn’t embrace the label.
“Yeah, they call me the Queen of Afrobeats, but there are a lot of us that are Queens,” Tiwa said.
She explained that while her success in the music industry may have earned her the title in the eyes of many, she believes it undermines the collective efforts of other talented female artists in the genre.
“Personally, I don’t like that tag. It’s uncomfortable. If I start accepting it, I’d have to be humble and secondly, it just doesn’t make sense to me,” she added.
Tiwa also emphasized that the weight of such a title comes with unnecessary pressure and expectations, which she would rather avoid. She prefers to share the spotlight with other women in Afrobeats who are also making waves.
Despite her reluctance to accept the crown, Tiwa Savage remains one of Afrobeats’ most successful female artists, rising to fame with her 2010 breakout single ‘Kele Kele Love’ and continuing to deliver hit after hit.
