Nigeria’s athletes are gearing up for the 2025 World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, Japan, with the National Sports Commission (NSC) promising full backing as the team prepares to represent the country on the global stage.
The delegation, consisting of 15 athletes, will be led by Tobi Amusan, the current world record holder and former champion in the women’s 100m hurdles. The squad is set to compete in a variety of track and field disciplines against top-level international competitors.
Bukola Olopade, Director General of the NSC, assured the team that they would receive all necessary resources and guidance. He motivated the athletes to give their utmost effort and aim for performances that would bring recognition to Nigeria.
“The Commission will provide every support required and stand firmly behind our athletes as they display Nigeria’s talent in Tokyo,” Olopade stated. “This is a proud moment for the country, and we are confident our representatives will compete with focus and aim for medal-winning performances.”
Alongside Amusan, the roster includes Kayinsola Ajayi, who has impressed this season in the men’s 100m, and Israel Okon, also in the 100m. Udodi Onwuzurike will run in the 200m, while Samuel Ogazi and Chidi Okezie are entered in the 400m. Ezekiel Nathaniel will contest the 400m hurdles, Charles Godfred will participate in the long jump, and Chukwuebuka Enekwechi will compete in the shot put.
On the women’s side, long jump national champion Prestina Ochonogor will compete alongside Ese Brume, who previously won silver at the 2022 World Championships in Oregon, USA. African discus record-holder Chioma Onyekwere-Lyons and Obiageri Amaechi are also part of the team. In addition, sprinter Rosemary Chukwuma will feature in the 100m, and Sade Olatoye will contest the hammer throw.
The championship is scheduled from September 13 to 21 in Tokyo. After not securing any medals in the 2023 edition in Budapest, Hungary, Team Nigeria is determined to make an impact and return home with podium finishes.
