NSC Halts NBF Elections to Ensure Proper Procedure

The National Sports Commission’s Director General,Bukola Olopade has put a temporary hold on the Nigeria Boxing Federation elections to guarantee proper procedure and allow full involvement from all relevant stakeholders.

Olopade acted swiftly after concerns emerged over irregularities that had cast doubt on the credibility of the NBF polls, prompting the postponement.

The decision followed widespread alarm among boxing officials when the election schedule was released, giving aspirants under 48 hours to submit their nomination forms and undergo screenings. Members raised suspicions that the compressed timeline was designed to prevent some candidates from participating.

In a bid to ensure the electoral process is transparent, fair, accountable, and inclusive, Olopade called an urgent meeting on Thursday, August 14. Attendees included key figures from the electoral committee, NBF Secretary General Olalekan Faseesin, and members of the recently dissolved board.

Olopade said, “We did this so that the stakeholders can get well informed and in order for the body to run an equitable, free and fair election.” He stressed that the elections must follow NSC electoral regulations, which guarantee candidates sufficient notice and preparation time. Olopade also ordered that the NBF elections be rescheduled to allow all parties to take part.

Following this directive, the NBF General Secretary and the electoral committee confirmed the postponement, announcing that the polls will now take place three weeks later. The statement also urged all stakeholders to remain attentive for the new date, which will be communicated in the near future.
