Former Minister of Information and ex-President-General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, John Nwodo, has cautioned that Nigeria risks disintegration before the 2027 general elections unless comprehensive constitutional reforms are urgently implemented.
Speaking at the launch of two books authored by veteran journalist Ike Abonyi in Abuja, Nwodo criticized the current governance structure, describing it as a “unitary system in disguise” rather than true federalism.
He advocated for a restructured federation that grants regions greater autonomy over their resources and internal affairs, while the federal government focuses on core responsibilities such as external defense, foreign policy, and immigration.
“If we head into 2027 without addressing these structural imbalances, there may be no election and worse still, no country,” Nwodo warned.
He linked Nigeria’s economic decline to poor infrastructure, low life expectancy, and rising youth unemployment, calling for urgent policy shifts to avert national collapse.
To revive the economy, Nwodo urged investment in education, digital literacy, vocational training, and agriculture, stressing that the country’s future depends on empowering its youth with relevant skills.
The event was attended by political leaders, academics, and civil society representatives, many of whom echoed Nwodo’s call for immediate restructuring as essential for national stability and development.
