Frank Mill, who was part of West Germany’s triumphant 1990 World Cup team, has passed away at 67 years old, confirmed on Tuesday by his former clubs Fortuna Düsseldorf and Rot-Weiss Essen.

Mill, who also earned a bronze medal for West Germany at the 1988 Seoul Olympics and lifted the German Cup trophy with Borussia Dortmund, died due to complications following a severe heart attack he suffered in May.

He made 17 appearances for West Germany and was included in the 1990 World Cup roster, though he did not play in any matches during the Italian tournament.

His hometown club Essen released a statement calling Mill “a legend” and “an ambassador for football across the country.”

Mill is the second player from the victorious 1990 World Cup team to die, after Andreas Brehme, the scorer of the decisive goal in the final against Argentina.
