OPay Launches N1.2bn, 10-Year Scholarship Programme with Olabisi Onabanjo University

OPay, one of Nigeria’s leading financial technology companies, has named Olabisi
Onabanjo University (OOU) as the ninth institution to benefit from its ambitious N1.2 billion,
10-year scholarship programme. The announcement was made in a statement released on
Wednesday, highlighting the company’s ongoing commitment to promoting education and
empowering young Nigerians.

According to the statement, the initiative reinforces OPay’s dedication to supporting the
academic journey of Nigerian students by alleviating the financial burden that often hinders
their progress. As part of the scholarship programme, 20 students from OOU will each
receive N300,000 annually for the next 10 years. The funds are intended to cover tuition fees and other academic-related costs, enabling recipients to focus fully on their studies and personal development without financial stress.

“This scholarship is more than just financial aid; it is a strategic investment in the future of
Nigerian youth,” the statement read in part. “By removing financial barriers, we are giving
students the opportunity to thrive academically and realise their full potential.”

The scholarship scheme is part of a broader effort by OPay to promote inclusive education
and provide long-term support to tertiary institutions across the country. The company
emphasized that as the programme expands, more universities from different regions of
Nigeria will be included, ensuring a nationwide impact.

OPay described the initiative as a “life-changing opportunity” that reflects its broader mission of creating value and driving social progress through targeted corporate social responsibility projects. The company noted that by supporting young Nigerians through scholarships, it is also contributing to the country’s development by nurturing a new generation of educated, empowered citizens.

So far, eight other universities have benefited from the programme, and OPay plans to
continue this momentum in the coming years. The scholarship is open to students based on merit and need, and beneficiaries are expected to maintain strong academic performance throughout the duration of their award.

With this latest inclusion of OOU, OPay continues to solidify its role not only as a fintech
leader but also as a committed partner in the educational and socio-economic growth of
Nigeria. The company believes that by investing in education today, it is helping to build a
brighter and more prosperous future for all.

During the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding, OPay’s Chief Public Affairs
Officer, Mr. Justin Zhang, emphasized the company’s commitment to youth empowerment
through education.

“Olabisi Onabanjo University is the ninth institution we’ve partnered with this year to provide scholarships to 20 students annually. We appreciate the warm reception and believe this initiative will help bright students concentrate on their studies without financial worries,” Zhang stated.

In response, the Vice-Chancellor of Olabisi Onabanjo University, Professor Ayodeji Agboola,
expressed the university’s appreciation for the partnership.
“We’ve had students who had to take gap years due to financial difficulties. This scholarship will ease that burden, allowing many to continue their education uninterrupted.

OPay’s support is timely and well-placed. Our university has a strong legacy, having produced several prominent figures in various sectors across Nigeria. Thank you, OPay,” he said.
