R&B singer R. Kelly, who is currently serving a 30-year sentence for racketeering and sex trafficking, was rushed to a North Carolina hospital after reportedly overdosing at the Federal Correctional Institution in Butner.
According to court documents, Kelly was placed in solitary confinement on June 10. Two days later, he was allegedly given an excessive dose of his prescribed anxiety and sleep medications by prison staff. On June 13, the singer collapsed in his cell, experiencing dizziness, vision loss, and eventually losing consciousness. He was immediately transported to a nearby hospital.
Kelly’s legal team, led by attorney Beau Brindley, claims the incident is connected to a credible murder plot allegedly involving prison staff. They allege that members of the facility staff approached Aryan Brotherhood inmate Mikeal Glenn Stine and asked him to kill Kelly in exchange for favors. Stine, who is reportedly gravely ill, refused and revealed the conspiracy instead.
While hospitalized, doctors reportedly discovered dangerous blood clots in Kelly’s legs and lungs. His attorneys claim he was discharged against medical advice and returned to solitary confinement without adequate medical care.
In response, Kelly’s legal team has filed an emergency motion seeking either home confinement or a temporary medical furlough, citing what they describe as “cruel and unusual punishment.” They have also appealed to former President Donald Trump for clemency.
A hearing on the matter is scheduled for June 20. Federal prosecutors have dismissed the claims as “fanciful” and “deeply unserious,” accusing Kelly of attempting to manipulate the legal system.
Kelly remains incarcerated in North Carolina, concurrently serving a separate 20-year sentence for child pornography charges.
