LASG Starts Demolition of Illegal Structures as Amnesty Expires

The Lagos State Building Control Agency has started removing illegal structures statewide following the end of the amnesty period granted by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu.

The agency stated on its website Monday that the operation commenced in Ogudu GRA, where officials enforced compliance with the state’s urban planning regulations following the expiration of the amnesty period.

The amnesty period has been extended to December 31, 2024, allowing property owners to regularize their documents.

Gbolahan Oki, the Permanent Secretary of LASBCA, stated that the enforcement drive aims to bring order to the state’s physical planning and safeguard the safety of residents.

He explained that the Lagos State Government had given ample time for property owners with illegal structures to secure the necessary approvals and adhere to building regulations.

Oki also noted that several notices had been issued before this final enforcement action.

Sadly, some residents have not complied, leaving the agency with no choice but to take enforcement steps to reclaim public spaces and avert building collapses.

Oki expressed optimism, stating that the enforcement drive will extend to other areas of the state as the government strengthens its efforts to cleanse the built environment, remove unapproved structures, prevent environmental damage, and ensure the safety of residents.

The agency reiterated its commitment to ensuring a well-structured and safe urban environment, in alignment with Governor Sanwo-Olu’s development agenda.

LASBCA also advised property owners and developers across Lagos State to comply with building regulations to prevent facing similar enforcement actions in other areas.

In addressing concerns that the decision was made hastily, the overseeing Permanent Secretary clarified that the exercise followed extensive consultations and repeated warnings to violators.

The agency confirmed that all affected buildings had been clearly marked and given notices months ahead, with specific compliance instructions.

The State Government urged property owners across Lagos to take action to regularize their buildings, as the enforcement drive will continue in other parts of the state.
