Veteran Nollywood actor, Jide Kosoko, has opened up about the sex-for-role practice in the Nigerian film industry, urging actresses to stand firm and reject such propositions. Speaking as a guest on the Honest Bunch podcast, Kosoko emphasized that no actress should feel forced to accept such offers.
He made it clear that actresses have the power to say no when faced with a sex-for-role proposition, stating, “If anyone offers you something you’re not comfortable with, just say no.” However, he also acknowledged that if an actress chooses to accept such an offer, it’s a decision she has made willingly, adding, “If you decide to go ahead with it, then you’re choosing to play by their rules.”
Kosoko clarified that his comments should not be seen as endorsing the practice of sex-for-roles. Instead, he suggested that actresses who succumb to these offers should take responsibility for their choices without blaming others. “If someone tells you they need something from you in exchange for a role and you refuse, you can walk away. They can’t force you into it. But if you decide to accept, that’s your choice—how does that concern everyone else?” he explained.
The veteran actor also shed light on the lengths some actresses are willing to go for fame, revealing that some enter the industry with the intent of using relationships to secure their positions. “Forget about all the talk of sex for roles. I know of some women who come into the industry with the mindset that sleeping with certain people will get them recognition. I know of a few popular actresses who’ve done this, and even some high-profile individuals,” Kosoko shared.
