Nollywood actress Nkechi Nweje has passed away at the age of 60 after a brief illness, leaving the movie industry in shock and sorrow. The news of her death was confirmed on Saturday by film producer Stanley Ajemba, also known as Stanley Ontop, who shared the heartbreaking announcement on his Instagram.
In his post, Stanley expressed disbelief over the sudden loss of Nweje, explaining that he had difficulty sharing the news earlier as it felt like a “dream.” He paid a touching tribute to the late actress, describing her as a vibrant, beloved figure who was both his “best friend and mentor.” Stanley recalled their last conversation during the “Queenth saga,” where she had offered him advice, urging him to stop. He ended his message by writing, “I am still speechless.”
He wrote: “Nollywood is in tears as we lost one of our vibrant Nollywood actresses @nkechi.nweje after a brief illness. I couldn’t post since morning because it felt like a dream to me. Ezigbo Nwanyi Onitsha, rest in peace ma’am, my best friend, she always called me to offer advice. The last time we spoke during the Queenth saga, she said Ontop, stop. I’m still speechless.”
In a follow-up post, Stanley shared more details about Nweje’s life, including her family background and career, as well as the illness she had been battling before her passing. He wrote: “Nkechi Winnie Angel Nweje, from Onitsha Ado in Anambra State. A devoted Christian and mother of six, born on June 6th, 1964. Married to Dr. Azubuike Nweje. The movie that made her popular was ‘Ezigbo Nwanyi Onitsha.’ She came from a rich, cultural family in Onitsha and was a graduate. She passed away at 60 years old.
According to family sources, her death was a result of complications from a surgery she had in November 2024. She had undergone a major stomach operation last year and had been recovering well until recently when she could no longer endure the pain. She passed away yesterday. She leaves behind her children and husband. Rest in peace with the Lord, Ezigbo Nwanyi Onitsha. This one really hurts.”
Nollywood actor Asa Ikuku also paid his respects to Nweje on Instagram, writing: “Rest in peace, mummy Nkechi Nweje TV (Nwanyi Onitsha). You were indeed a blessing to us. But God knows best. We will miss you so much, great Nollywood actress. Rest on, legend.”
Veteran Nollywood actress Rita Edochie also shared her grief by posting a candlelight image on Instagram with the caption, “This world is really not our home.”
Nweje’s passing marks a significant loss for the Nollywood community, and she will be remembered fondly for her contributions to the industry.
