British boxing icon Ricky Hatton has shared his insights on what could persuade Tyson Fury to come out of retirement and face Anthony Joshua in the ring.
The long-awaited heavyweight clash between the two British fighters had been in discussions for years, but plans were halted when Fury announced his retirement in January after back-to-back losses to reigning champion Oleksandr Usyk. Since then, Fury, known as the “Gypsy King,” has shown no interest in making a comeback. However, Hatton, who shares a close bond with Fury, recently weighed in on the matter.
The former world champion in the light welterweight division is convinced that a lucrative offer could be enough to lure Fury back into action against Joshua.
Speaking to Sky Sports, Hatton stated: “Tyson’s retired before. It just so happens they were trying to make the Joshua fight. They were trying to make it for 10 years, and it looks like they’re still not going to make it now Tyson’s retired.
“But I would take that retirement with a pinch of salt, knowing Tyson. If he gets offered the right money, the right purse for the AJ fight, knowing Tyson as I do, I think he’d jump at it.”
Hatton suggested that Fury should seriously consider the opportunity, as missing out on such a momentous fight might leave him with regrets in the future.
“I think Tyson will kick himself if he’s sat on his sofa 10 years down the line and thinks to himself: ‘I wonder what would have happened if I’d have fought AJ?’ He’s in a position to do something about it now rather than be cursing himself for the rest of his life.”
Fury’s choice to step away from boxing was met with disappointment from fans across the globe, as he revealed his decision via social media.
Hatton, who was part of Fury’s camp for his 2018 bout with Deontay Wilder, admitted that while a showdown with Joshua could be enough to bring Fury back, he personally feels that the heavyweight champion has already achieved enough and should consider retiring permanently.
“If he does, that’s the last one I’d like him to have. Because you don’t like to see your mates get hurt.”
