Onyedika Exit Shatters Nigeria’s UCL Bid

Nigeria’s final contender in this season’s UEFA Champions League bid met an unfortunate end on Wednesday night, as Raphael Onyedika and his Club Brugge teammates bowed out following a resounding 3-0 defeat to Aston Villa at Villa Park. This result sealed their elimination with a 6-1 aggregate scoreline at the round of 16 stage.

The Belgian champions’ hopes were effectively dashed within the opening 17 minutes when Kyriani Sabbe received a straight red card for bringing down Marcus Rashford in a clear goal-scoring opportunity. With Brugge already trailing 3-1 from the first leg, playing a man down made their comeback aspirations nearly impossible.

Aston Villa’s dominance was spearheaded by Marco Asensio, who made an instant impact after coming off the bench in the second half. The Spanish international broke the deadlock in the 50th minute, capitalizing on a Leon Bailey assist. Seven minutes later, Ian Maatsen doubled the lead, finishing off a pass from Morgan Rogers.

Asensio then sealed the victory on the hour mark, converting Rashford’s cross to wrap up a convincing triumph for Unai Emery’s side. Villa now advance to the quarter-finals, where they will take on Paris Saint-Germain.

Onyedika’s exit marks the end of Nigerian representation in the Champions League this season, following the previous eliminations of Ademola Lookman (Atalanta), Victor Boniface and Nathan Tella (Bayer Leverkusen), and Samuel Chukwueze (AC Milan).

Lookman had briefly ignited hope for Atalanta in their playoff against Brugge, finding the net just seconds after coming on as a substitute. However, his missed penalty proved costly as the Italian side fell 3-1 on the night, exiting with a 5-2 aggregate loss.

Chukwueze’s AC Milan bowed out against Feyenoord despite managing a 1-1 draw at San Siro, with the Dutch team progressing 2-1 on aggregate. Meanwhile, Boniface and Tella endured a humbling departure, as Bayer Leverkusen succumbed to Bayern Munich in a crushing 5-0 aggregate defeat, following a 2-0 loss in the second leg.
