Super Eagles and Galatasaray striker, Victor Osimhen, delivered a match-winning performance on Monday, scoring twice to propel his team six points ahead of fierce rivals, Fenerbahce.
His remarkable brace sealed a crucial victory, reinforcing Galatasaray’s championship aspirations with a commanding display that highlighted his immense value to the squad.
The Nigerian star was absent from Galatasaray’s disappointing 4-1 loss to AZ Alkmaar in the Europa League playoffs last week. However, he marked his return in spectacular fashion, playing a decisive role in their latest league triumph.
Following a scoreless opening half, Osimhen wasted no time making an impact after the break.
Just moments into the second half, he leaped above the defenders to nod home a pinpoint cross from Przemyslaw Frankowski, giving Galatasaray the lead in the 47th minute.
Rizespor quickly responded in the 54th minute when Abdullahi Sowe found the back of the net, restoring parity.
Nevertheless, Osimhen struck again in the 86th minute, delivering a late match-winner that ensured his side secured all three points.
With this win, Galatasaray tightened their grip at the summit of the league table, extending their advantage over Jose Mourinho’s Fenerbahce, whom they will face in a much-anticipated showdown next Monday.
Since arriving on loan from Napoli last summer, Osimhen has been a key figure for the Turkish giants.
He has netted 14 goals and provided four assists in 18 league matches, adding five goals and one assist in the Europa League. This takes his total tally to an impressive 24 goal contributions in 24 games across all competitions.
Galatasaray fans will be eager to see Osimhen at his best when they take on AZ Alkmaar in the second leg of their Europa League playoff on Thursday, as they attempt to overturn the 4-1 first-leg defeat suffered in his absence.
Meanwhile, all eyes are on the upcoming Istanbul derby against Fenerbahce on February 24, a high-stakes clash that could have major title implications.
