Kano State Governor Warns Against Use of Students for Manual Labour

Kano State Governor, Abba Yusuf, issued a stern warning to teachers on Sunday, prohibiting them from involving students in hard labor both on and off school premises.

The warning was made public in a statement released by his spokesperson, Sunusi Dawakin-Tofa, on Monday. The governor stressed that schools should be focused on education and moral guidance, rather than manual labor.

Governor Yusuf’s warning followed an unscheduled visit to the School for Arabic Studies in Kano, where he found students digging a toilet pipeline. The governor, visibly upset by the sight, questioned the headmaster about the task being assigned to the students. The headmaster responded that the work was given to the students after school hours.

However, Governor Yusuf ordered an immediate halt to the practice, ensuring that students would not be used for such labor again.

Assuring the school management, the governor pledged that his administration would renovate all dilapidated school buildings, including the mosque on the premises. He also directed that any school-related projects should be submitted to the Ministry of Education or his office for approval and execution.

In a separate inspection, Governor Yusuf visited the ongoing reconstruction work at the Kano Printing Press, which had been damaged during the End-Bad-Governance protests. He instructed the contractor to strictly follow the contract and expressed concerns over some structures that did not meet government standards.
