A member of the House of Representatives, Mansur Soro, has warned that the planned increase in electricity tariffs, expected to take effect in March, will further burden Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs) already struggling with high operational costs.
Soro, who chairs the House Committee on Small and Medium-Scale Enterprises, noted that unreliable power supply remains one of the biggest challenges for SMEs in Nigeria. He argued that raising electricity tariffs would worsen the situation, making it even harder for small businesses to survive.
“The high cost of electricity is already a major obstacle for SMEs, and any further increase will cripple many businesses. Instead of raising tariffs, the government should focus on alternative energy solutions, such as solar-powered industrial development centers, to reduce the reliance on expensive and unstable power supply,” Soro stated.
He also stressed the need for better funding and policy support for SMEs, describing them as the backbone of Nigeria’s economy. According to him, a well-supported SME sector would drive economic growth, create jobs, and improve overall national productivity.
Soro urged the government to reconsider the tariff hike and instead implement policies that would make electricity more affordable and accessible to small businesses across the country.
