The Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) has revealed plans to host its first-ever Niger Delta Sports Festival as part of its broader strategy to promote both sports and human capital growth within the region. The festival will be held at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, and will serve as the launch of activities commemorating the 25th anniversary of the NDDC.

Seledi Thompson-Wakama, the NDDC Director of Corporate Affairs, made this announcement in a statement issued on Sunday from Port Harcourt. The festival, which is set to take place from April 1 to 9, will align with Nigeria’s new direction for sports development, as well as President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to nurturing talent and fostering innovation in the sector.

Thompson-Wakama highlighted, “The festival will unite thousands of young athletes from the nine states of the Niger Delta region, providing them with a platform to showcase their skills and talents. It will feature Olympic-style games and over ten sports disciplines, bringing together the nine states under the NDDC’s mandate. We recognize the transformative power of sports and our role as a key player in Nigeria’s development. This is our contribution to the growth of sports in the country.”

She further emphasized that the NDDC understands and supports President Tinubu’s drive to revive the sports sector. As an intervention agency, the NDDC is committed to collaborating with the state governments in the region to advance sports development.

The Niger Delta Sports Festival also aims to support the states in uncovering hidden sports talent, nurturing these athletes to become both national and international stars, and guiding them toward successful careers in sports that foster self-reliance and economic independence.

“The festival’s objective is also to increase grassroots participation in sports, rejuvenate and enhance the region’s competitiveness, and foster a sense of unity, friendship, and security among the people of the Niger Delta. We are excited to have collaborated with Dunamis Icon Limited, our Project Consultant, to bring this vision to life,” Thompson-Wakama concluded.
